Judging A Tool By Its Reviews

Can you judge a book by its cover?  Not necessarily.  A tool by its reviews?  Much more likely.  It's a very good idea before buying a new tool (particularly an expensive power tool) to check the user reviews and magazine reviews from various online sources.

Magazine Reviews

Magazines like Fine Home Building and Popular Woodworking have professional reviews by writers and critics familiar with mechanics, outdoor living and home repair.  The critical reviews can give you a good indication of the use of a tool, its primary target audience and both the advantages and disadvantages of having a certain make.  Take into consideration both print magazines and web magazines, also called E-Zines.

User Ratings

User ratings are also of tremendous help.  While users don't write with as much serious effort as a magazine writer, their opinions are often straight to the point and honest.  Face it: they've already invested money in the product and have nothing to gain or lose by telling the truth.  If a tool receives a lot of negative comments then there's a very real possibility it is a flawed design.  (Tools don't exactly cater to the artistic; it's either useful or it isn't)  However, users satisfied with their purchase are usually willing to write a favorable comment about a particular brand and model.

Top Manufacturers

Craftsman (affiliated with Sears) currently offers the highest rated tools and power tools in America, according to an EquiTrend survery by Harris Interactive.  Black And Decker sells the most merchandise, however, being the number one company in national overall sales.  Other companies like Makita, Milwaukee and Dremel test high with consumers, and naturally are among the most successful tool manufacturers in the world.

Grade And Service Warranty

When choosing a tool, also keep in mind the grade.  There are many tools that are affordable as in cheap.  They might be reasonable for minor home repairs but these kinds of tools usually aren't dependable for repeated use.  Look for high grades that are preferred by DIY homeowners and if you can find them, tools made and marketed for professional contractors.  These are the best tools you can buy.  While nothing is certain in life, a few minor things are guaranteed.  For expensive power tools try and purchase one that comes with a service warranty.  Some companies will replace defective products through mail and if you buy the tool from a store, you may be able to get an exchange the same day.

You can judge a tool by its reviews!  Research carefully and judge away.  You can't afford not to when it comes to home repair.
