Five Home Decorating Tips

What's the cheapest way to renovate your house?  Why, home redecorating of course.  Why worry yourselves with home repairs or tax yourselves with remodeling, when you can simply repaint and rework your interiors?  Home decoration can be as elegant and as complicated as a designer chooses.  Before you get into the details, here are five general tips on how to begin decorating.

1. Think About Your Comfort

You may get a lot of advice on how to decorate your home and hear a lot of opinions (some even expert opinions) on what looks good.  But ultimately the choice is yours.  You will be the one living in the house and those colors will be all around you constantly.  Avoid acting on impulse and consider the long-term quality.  What might seem cute and unique today might be dreadfully embarrassing a year from now. 

2. Consider An Interior Decorator

While you might choose to decorate yourself, don't entirely discount the value of a professional opinion.  Inexperienced homeowners often hire an interior decorator to decorate their first home.  Working with a professional does have its advantages.  Interior decorators often get designer discounts on merchandise and have lots of contacts; they can also steer you in the right direction even while working your preferences into the final product.  A brief consultation, if nothing else, can prove very helpful.

3. Take Notes Throughout The Year

People have plenty of personal opinions when they're not pressured to come up with a decorative theme.  But once the time comes, they seem to forget.  Throughout the year, take down notes on what you admire on TV shows, magazines and the designs you see in other people's homes.  Also take brief notes on what you don't like.  Soon, patterns will start to emerge and you will have figured out your decorating vision.

4. Remember The Color

Color is the make or break feature of home decoration.  The actual design could be comfortable and well thought out; but if the color scheme is off the whole idea can be a turn off.  Pay careful attention to the color of paint, in fabrics, on furniture, floors and even windowsills.
