Home Repair and Maintenance Home Getting A Grant For Home Repair |
Is it true what you've heard? That you can repair your home without spending any of your money? How about applying for a grant? Maybe you don't have that much money but your house is in need of some serious repairs. Hey, the government has a lot money if not much else, right?
Federal Resources
The Department of Housing and Urban Development otherwise known as H.U.D. does offer many assistance programs-not necessarily to everyone, but to many people who may be in special need. There is assistance for first-time homeowners (for constructing a new home), for senior citizens, for veterans, for disabled persons and for homeless individuals. Additionally, although not considered a "disadvantage" there is assistance available to women, Native Americans and farm workers.
Other Resources
The USDA Rural Housing Service is another organization that provides opportunities-specifically to rural Americans, for home construction as well as renovations and repairs. The organization also makes financing available to elderly, disabled or low-income residents who have trouble making rent payments on their home or apartment. In addition, local institutions such as banks offer loans to pay for house repairs and renovations. Of course, these types of financial loans aren't as appreciated as government grants. Everybody prefers to get a "free" grant with no return payment.
The Truth About Government Grants
Unfortunately, the government is not in the practice of "giving away" free money. In order to successfully get a government grant, many obligations are required and must be met-under threat of penalty. Regardless of obligation, however, it is very difficult to get a grant. The majority of grants are awarded to federal agencies, and the few that aren't are given to people who truly understand the complicated process of applying for a grant. (Writing grants applications is actually an entire career!)
The First Step
If you believe you meet the specifications of specific housing repair programs, then you can apply for a grant. The first step is to contact your city or county's Human Services Department and requesting information on affordable housing, grants for home repairs or any specific criteria you meet. It also advisable that you call the city or county Building Officer or Building Inspector so you can better understand how the process works.
Getting a grant is not easy, but then again neither is repairing a home! Both can be done, however. Now you know the first step.
